I previously posted on this thread, stating my disappointment at the new BPC design. But having experimented (very quickly) in photoshop I think I am coming round to the design.
A number of people have suggested that a good way to distinguish between copies and originals might be to implement a "corner tag", a little like the Tech II or Faction tag in the top left-hand corner. To illustrate, I created something along these lines as shown below:
It is at this point that you begin to realise a number of important requirements for the design of the BPC:
1) BPC must be clearly distingusihable from BPO 2) Design must be scalable (i.e. work at reduced thumbnail sizes) 3) It should be umabiguous, i.e. immmediately obvious what it is regardless of player language/culture.
The alternative design I have presented fails on at least points 2) and 3). You'll notice that the "Tech II" symbol does not re-scale when the icon is down-sized. This scale invariance means that the symbol is ALWAYS clear and umabiguous. However, introducing another "tag" and also making this scale-invariant simply obscures the underlying blueprint image. I have therefore broken the scale-invariant rule, and down-sized the tag in the smaller images - but now the tag requires a mircoscope to see it!
For the tag, I have used the symbol "C". However, this hardly universal across a number of different languages.
And so I have come to realise that the only alternative is to change the general appearance of the blueprint image (as CCP have done), and not add any more confusing tag symbols. I didn't commit much more time to this, but I suppose I could upload more ideas if this post continues to generate interest.
...maybe there is an opportunity to launch a community art contest for this? Or maybe not (c.f. Design a space-ship contest ).
Anyway, you could make it green, pink, hatched, checkerboard or whatever, but all would probably look no better than the current design CCP have come up with.
you forgot point 0.
It must be quick also, when working in a pos tower with hangers of bpo's and bpc's you need to be able to identify them quick, while your design maybe aesthetically pleasing it does not jump out quickly as ccp's does.
i dont look for the little icons, i just use the mouse wheel until i see the different base colour, which is far easier to see than a small icon.
I know that they are an eye sore, but im not going to really complain about it. It got done. thats all that matters.
